Preface
I learned about tithing as a young man.
Many parents that I knew made their children give 10% of their allowance or
their pay checks from after school jobs, to the church. Tithing is one of
those doctrines that is drilled into you from, as they say, the cradle to the
grave. You are hard pressed to go to church and not see or hear something
about tithing. Even at offering time, many churches bring up the tithers
first and then allow the rest of the givers to come after. You even have a
special place to put your tithes. Many churches have a special tithe bin
to put your offering in. Some people feel a sense of pride in being
able to put there offering envelope there, instead of the offering plates that
are held by ushers on the side. Some will even put there non tithing
envelope into the special place, just to make it seem like they are an
“official” member of the body of Christ.

The doctrine of tithing is a bible teaching under the
old testament law and is a good way to give. Where I and others take issue
is the teaching that this old testament teaching is a requirement today.
As you read this, I want you to come away with a solid foundation of how to
give. Not that tithing is wrong, but that there is now an official way to
give that has nothing to do with tithing. Do not walk away thinking that
you should not give. That would be a wrong understanding. Only know
that no one can require you to give any certain amount of money to the support
of a ministry.
